“Can you make that beep stop?”
I heard that question hundreds of times in RV service.
Then I saw what was behind the detector.
It was not an independent alarm. It was wired into the RV’s 12-volt house system—and the voltage reaching it was too low for reliable detection.
It started with a couple who came into our service department before a trip. They did not ask for an inspection. They did not ask about their converter.
They pointed at the little detector near the floor and said:
“Can you just make that beep stop?”
I had heard that question more times than I could count. Owners call it a bad detector. An old detector. An annoying detector.
Most of them have already tried pressing the button. Some have pulled the fuse. Some have covered it with a towel. Some have disconnected it completely because they could not sleep through one more beep.
That morning, I nearly gave them the same quick answer I had given other RV owners for years:
“Let’s see if it needs replacing.”
But the technician working beside me asked one question first.
“Has it been doing this more often lately?”
The husband nodded.
“Usually at night. Sometimes when we are getting ready to leave. It will stop for a while, then start again.”
His wife added:
“The lights still work. The refrigerator is running. We are plugged in. So we figured the detector itself was just going bad.”
That sentence stayed with me because it sounded completely reasonable.
If the RV lights work…
If the water pump still runs…
If shore power is connected…
Why would anyone suspect the small detector near the floor is the first thing in the RV that may no longer be getting reliable power?
